The car featured short overhangs, pop-up headlights, a removable composite targa roof panel and storage areas both front and rear (basically a very early Boxster)., The 914 was available with either Volkswagens 1.7 litre four-cylinder boxser engine producing 80PS or with Porsches 2.0 litre six-cylinder engine from the 911 T producing 110PS, this variant being referred to as the 914-6 and was only produced from 1970 to 1972., In 1973, a 2.0 litre four-cylinder model based on the 1.7 VW producing 100PS was made available which was followed with a 1.8 litre, 85PS four-cylinder option., The four-cylinder models were fitted with a four-stud wheel pattern and manufactured by coachbuilder Karmann at their Osnabruck factory.
